I have promised earlier to get back at some of the stories of the fiction study. The most interesting of them is Mark Leyer's Selection from My Cousin, My Gastroenterologist. This style of writing amasses multifuls of images and symbols. The first paragraph will suffice you to get the accurate picture of the busy city, man and street, what goes into the eyes and mouth and lungs in one morning of living in the modern city of the modern world. When he emerged from the fog to be greeted by signs that invite him to a good food. And find him revealing his abuse of some growth hormone to the end of that list of different things that looked endless. That is art isn't it?

The least challenging of them all to me was the Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin. I could figure out that Louise Mallard was faking that storm of grief to come and reveal her true feelings about the news of the death of her oppressive husband B. Mallard. I know this story belongs in week 1 and apparently, this entry is for week 2, but I intend to make my point across the whole period of three weeks of fiction. The Birth Mark by Nathaniel HawthornAe again from week 1 was the same story but despite the heavy vocabulary dose I like some of the expressions and phrases that present a whole life experience in few but rich and condensed words. For instance, Aylmer's assistant, Aminadab is described as someone who "..Handled physical details as if there were nothing beyond them; yet spiritualized them all and redeemed himself from materialism by strong and eager aspiration towards the infinite. In his grasp the veriest cold of earth assumed a soul." Para 51. An other is this passage: "It was the sad confession and continual exemplification of the shortcomings of the composite man, the spirit burdened with clay and working in matter, and of the despair that assails the higher nature at finding itself so miserably thwarted by the earthly part." Week 2, oh Virginia Woolf and the Symbol! Was the lady just ranting at the Mountain from that hotel room balcony, however, I am determined to study this story more and find out for myself what she is talking about.

I wonder if my problem due to cultural parochialism of one side or is this an other level of consciousness?

It is a result of endeavours or deviations of intruders, people who do not belong in the letters fraternity by the way of talent. May be they became associated with poetry by the way of staying courses and, passing exams and earning P what Ds to wield power in education and making curricula. As evident in the film, poetry teaching is perverted to match the curious agenda of the educational authorities of the time. It emphasized strict rules of tradition and dress codes for students and teachers alike.

Mr Keating came arrived in a very swift and strong fashion, like Jesus in the temple, looking rather queer but appropriate to the situation. He came to try and veer the class back to the essence of poetry, which does not involve metric measurements as the case in the text book of that class written by a certain Pritchard PhD! The whole thing looked like a struggle between the forces of status quo that perverted the course of Literature teaching to something similar to geometry and the forces of literature preservation which endeavoured as professor Michael Griffith say, to "pervert the system".

Go To Literature

Hi mates,

My name is David Mabor Chadar. This is my second year at ACU. I am doing BT/BA; I suppose you all know what those abbreviations mean. This first entry in my Live Journal is a launching document for my resolve to study Literature. I will express my point of view on Literature in general and this unit 'Understanding Literature' in particular in my next entry. Another thing is that I would prefer not to nail my picture up on the web at the moment. In this decision I considered people's reactions to my day-to-day appearances in shopping centres "in Australia" my adopted country for several years now and the birthplace of my four children. I only promise you to continue checking what might be more persnable of my many available pictures-by the way I own a 5.1 mp hp digital camera-hopping I might show you some of them later when I feel more of you got more familiar with the contour, shades and texture of my head.

However, if you are someone who goes beyond heads and tails like Michael, Maya, David and others, in other words, if you are capable to bypass the sinking self and proceed to the level of the thinking self, then, the best parts of ourselves can meet and enjoy company. Whatever, my life experience, I believe, is very rich and full of variety and it would appear to me now as if I have lived in two or more centuries. Do you know any one other than your friend David who was born at home with the help of an elderly lady, a neighbour, he was told later to call his other mother? How many people you know whose whole family shared one bedroom with the guests, the animals and the poultry? How many of those you know slept on animal skins and as babies were carried around in bags made of animal skins and bare hands and tree leaves and tree skins were used for cleanliness and hygiene? Do you know many people whose first experience of woven clothes was school uniforms which were preferred to be worn only during school hours to preserve them from wear and tear as long as possible?

The first most dramatic thing in the life of your mate occurred when he was about five years old. Around mid-day, enemy soldiers from the northern part of his country of birth stormed the village home of his family. They ransacked the house under the pretex of searching for the rebels. His blind auntie assumed the task of answering the threatening question which the soldiers asked in the native language of Dinka with funny accent 'Anyanya Anyanya totio? Meaning where are the rebels? His auntie replied pleadingly in a sentence whose first part was in Dinka and the last partwas in Arabic in an even funnier accent: " miethcie en ayamien" meaning my children I am blind-apparently she was not the right person to direct anybody to the whereabouts of anybody or anything- which they responded to with a laughter and they moved out of the house except one who started gesturing at his mother in a clear indication of come on here. Come on here. At that moment a loud voice apparently from the leader of the group came through the air "yalla yalla" meaning let us go in Arabic and the soldier immediately ran off without a word to join the moving pack. A short while after wards, a native Dinka civilian collaborator arrived following the soldiers. He put his traditional weapons on the side of the house, lit a match and set the house alight forcing the mother, her two sick young children and their blind auntie to take refuge under a near by palm tree where they watched their beloved home along with food reserves and other belongings burn to ashes.

David was the first child of his parents. A second child a boy had died of daihiria at six months of age three years earlier. Now his sister who witnessed the incident of home burning was to die of a mysterious swelling in her head before she was three. No more children were born after that because the mother for one reason or another lost her fertility. Your friend survived alone to go to school after the civil war to learn other people's languages and ideas. To acquire knowledge about other people who perform miracles and create amazing things like the radio transistor, the airplane, and the fire stick, the automobile and many other things. Through out his years at primary school David marveled at stories from the regional capital city where he hears people travel sitting down in chairs with a roof over their heads in some very special type of automobile. Other stories say that the houses are lit with some kind of very bright lamb such that you can pick an ant walking on the floor in the darkest of the nights.

As you can see David survived all kinds of hazards including starvation and to grow up and learn other languages. The secret word of the human soul is feeling in the circumstance. In those days of material hardship, a good meal or winning a seat in a bus in the capital city of the country of birth were source of joy and securing a front seat in a cargo truck when traveling was a great honour. He survived to travel the world, see some of the evidence of what is perceived to be human progress. He saw the pyramids of Egypt, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Sydney Opera House and more. As a resident of Australia he faces other kinds of threats: the mail, the confusing variety of foods, the telephone and the techno-dragons, IQ judges and cockroaches. He is daunted by news of strange crimes in this abundance including people taking their own lives for unconvincing reasons young or old. Truly not by bread alone does human kind live. We need both fuelling and feeling. If we are in need of human fuel, we go to the kitchen. But where do we go if we want to heal our hurting or distorted feelings, or if we want exercise for our healthy feelings? The answer is: go to Literature.

NB: There will be another version of this document in the future.
